Time to kiss Rumsfeld goodbye

President Bush has a golden opportunity to improve his approval ratings. Besides, there are simply too many reasons not to heed the call for Rumsfeld’s ouster.

Troop Levels: Rumsfeld made some gross miscalculations about the troop levels in Iraq, refused to listen to his generals and landed the US in this mess. Its about time someone paid the price for the mess in Iraq.

Approval Ratings: The US electorate rewarded Bush with a second term and is now having to live through a worsening nightmare in Iraq with no change in sight. This is clearly reflected in his approval ratings. This a great opportunity to bump up his approval ratings.

It can’t hurt: Rumsfeld appears to be universally hated. I am yet to hear of anyone besides the President who still stands up for him! Getting rid of him can’t hurt. The war It can only help.
Time for a fresh look at Iraq: The current leadership has certainly failed in Iraq. A fresh look at the situation will certainly help the crisis. It might at least help launch a PR effort to lessen the hatred for the US in general.

Legacy Planning: Lastly, this decision might actually help soften President Bush’s hard-assed image and actually set the stage for perhaps a better legacy than what he appears to be headed for now. Changing the Chief of Staff doesn’t help beyond a certain point. President Bush needs to do more than that. Getting rid of Rumsfeld might be a good start.

Immigration Issue Takes Centerstage

Immigration is a hot issue today on the US political battlefield particularly because its an election year. Proposals and counter proposals are flooding the capital. In the rush to solve this seemingly perennial crisis most politicians on both sides of the aisle are doing little to try and separate illegal and legal immigration. All the discussions range from extreme protectionist measures to political maneuvering to gain the upper hand on the issue.

One the one hand, all and sundry especially in Washington love to talk about how America is falling behind in Math and Science education. Besides, there is constant talk of how even high end jobs are moving overseas. Yet, in our backyard here in Silicon Valley there are scores highly qualified advanced degree holders diligently working for high tech companies, paying taxes and doing every bit to help the US economy. Yet, such folks are forced to wait for years to get their green card. This scenario has not changed for decades. Ironically, despite being a country of immigrants, the US still seems to have a hard time differentiating the qualified legal immigrants from the rest!

Why should all green card holders not have a right to vote and participate in the political process? In the obsession to tackle illegal immigration, legal immigrants who should be welcomed with open arms are being put through inordinate senseless delays as Government Departments struggle to cope with meaningless paper work.

I think both political parties would do America a world of good if they placed all legal immigration on a fast track. Give green card holders citizenship without having to go through another two year application process. Make it attractive and quick for H1Bs to convert to green cards holders. Likewise offer incentives for foreign students with advanced degrees to stay in the country. Maybe Ph.Ds get citizenship after 2-3 years of work in the US, maybe they get incentives to continue their research, commericalize their research etc., MS grads get special incentives for pursuing doctoral degrees.

The intent is certainly not to trivilize the immigration challenge. It is certainly a critical issue with very wide ranging implications and has to be dealt with carefully (esp in a election year!). But as a start illegal and legal immigration must be separately dealt with espicially at a time when America’s future is supposedly at stake with loss of jobs overseas, decline in education standards, the economic downturn, the endless war on terror, and the works. The immediate fix might not bee too complicated and might lie in fixing legal immigration. The Silicon Valley magic might just return! At a min this will turn the tables against America’s so-called competition from India and China. We’ll have the best and brightest moving here rather than the reverse brain drain that is happening today to some extent.

Sonia has opposition on the backfoot!

In a master stroke Sonia Gandhi quit her post as MP. I think it a very smart move. On the one hand her supporters are bound to go berserk over this. On the other she continues to have power and influence over the ruling coalition. Most importantly, the BJP and the rest of the opposition will have a hard time dealing with this crisis. Her political brilliance is continuing to shine, no doubt.

DP World bids US goodbye!

The infamous Dubai ports deal has ended with the company, DP World planning to dump all its US ports. Its a sad end to needless political drama. What is the US going to do next –Stop all Arab Airlines from flying into the US? I agree with President Bush’s concern that we have sent the wrong message by needlessly antogonizing the UAE.

Iraq: Civil War must stop!

It sad that complete out and out civil war has broken out in Iraq. I think the US is not as actively involved in controlling the situation because they expect the “trained” Iraqi forces to handle the situation. I was heard on the radio that these Iraq forces did nothing when Shiites were attacking the Sunnis. Its a pity that country that was invaded by another country is now in the midst of a civil war among its own people. I think what was bad has become worse. I hope the UN or the US or both will intervene to bring the situation under control. Ironically, the common enemy of the Iraqis (the US), has temporarily become the good guy trying to maintain peace!

Western Countries Are Sending Wrong Messages

Like it or not the world is fast moving towards an “us vs them” dichotomy. Shortly, after 911 the US mantra was “You are either with us or with the enemy”. This rings true even today despite all attempts to forge peace, spread freedom and democracy. With its actions the US and the rest of the Western Countries are continuously driving the world towards a new big divide — “The Muslim World and the Rest”. Here are three recent examples.

Ports Crisis: Just because it is a UAE based company that is going to take over management of port terminals why should it go through additional scrutiny? Its like telling the Arab world we don’t trust you. We suspect you might be terrorists! Btw, I have heard that the Jabal Ali Port in Dubai is one of the finest and best managed in the world.

Palestionian Aid: “The United States is not prepared to fund an organization that advocates the destruction of Israel, that advocates violence,” said Condi Rice. Fair enough. But what does the US expect from Hamas? Turn a new leaf and give up everything they have stood for all these years. Would anyone believe them even if they did? After all they stood for something and the Palestinians voted them to power. The US has been pushing for democracy and free and fair elections the world over. Then it should also be prepared to face the results. I think its important to give Hamas some time instead of “jumping all over them, setting the stage for their failure etc”. The BJP (by no means a terrorist org.) in India (known to include extreme right wing members), made a conscious attempt to make peace with Pak. They even nominated a Muslim to be the President of India).

Cartoon Crisis: The Europeans firmly joined the “Rest of the World” (despite its differences with the US) to appear as one giant conspiracy against Islam. Ironically, the US got some brownie points on the re-bound in this entire cartoon controversy. It wouldn’t be surprising to hear a “You are not the only bad guys, the Europeans are equally bad if not worse” sentiment from the Islamic countries.

There is a nice report in the NY Times (reg required)about differing views o the reaction in the Arab world to the crisis. Its heartening to note that there are liberals and others in Islamic countries who are denouncing the violent reponse to the cartoons.

Unnecessary trouble: Mohammed Cartoon

In an already divided world why would someone unnecessarily create further tensions by publishing cartoons of Prophet Mohammed. Firstly, why would you exercise your freedom of expression when you know fully well that it could deeply offend others? Secondly, why now at the peak of tensions with the Muslim countries? All the concerned Govts must come together and put out this fire before it gets out of control.

While one can sympathize with free speech champions and endlessly debate this issue, I think it is important that free speech proponents give up this fight in the larger interest of the world. Not everyone in the world is educated enough to understand and appreciate the free speech views which are accepted and practiced in the western world. The supposed desire to spread freedom and democracy across the globe has already caused the Western World enough trouble. The world could do without the spread of one more western principle, at least for now.

Interestingly enough these cartoons were published four months back. The public outcry was the result re-publication of these cartoons!

It is heartening to see some Muslim organizations like the Free Muslim Coalition condemning the reaction in the Muslim world to these cartoons.
