Google Groups vs Yahoo Groups

Google has been slowly launching all the regular Yahoo features one after another. First it was free email, followed by photos, groups, news, froogle, IM, voice chat etc etc. I use both Yahoo groups as well as Google groups and I must say that Yahoogroups is far superior. If you are thinking o starting a new group I would highly recommend Yahoo. There are many so called social networking sites that could do the job, but Yahoo has the inherent advantage of having been around longer than most. The other day someone sent me a few photos while I was in Yahoo Messenger. I was pleasantly surprised that I could select the pics that I wanted and save them directly to Yahoo photos. Cool bit of integration.

The database feature in Yahoogroups lets you maintain a phone book online of all your members. It supprts photos, files, calendar, and polls as well. In comparison Google groups has hardly changed visibly since its launch. Google seems to launch a whole bunch of competing products but doesn’t seem to be doing justice to most of them.

Youtube Buzz

The Youtube buzz is very reminiscent of the dotcomm days. Lots of free video and lots of traffic. How they will make money no one seems to know (I dare say “care”). Yet, they have boat loads of dough. One investor said to me, “If I had a chance to invest in Youtube, I would simply because Sequoia Capital has invested”

This is sooooooo dotcomm!

Meanwhile, there are competitors galore. In the same space this company seems to at least have a business model of some sort.

Google and Chips?

Check out this NYT article.

“Beyond servers, there are signs that Google is now designing its own microchips. The company has hired many of the engineers responsible for the Digital Equipment Corporation’s well-regarded Alpha chip….”

I am curious to see if this ever turns out to be true or another mere speculation. There was an article in the recent Businessweek about Google’s lack of hit services/solutions besides search. Sometimes it appears that there is some method to Google product strategy madness, but very often it doesn’t. This is one more instance of lack of it.

Firefox buggy?

I am using Firefox 1.5.0.4 and I find that it crashes more often than the earlier version of Firefox. Wonder why.

I go to a website and click on a link to see another page and this just causes it to crash! It happens randomly with no apparent pattern. I wonder if it has anything to do with browster incapatibility with the latest Firefox? Maybe not. Just a thought, because I have the same Firefox installed on another computer with similar specs which does not crash as often.

Blogger Bug?

Blogger seems to have a problem with “justify” in WYSIWYG mode. When I try to publish it gives some error message about some embedd tags. I get around this by removing those tags from the edit html mode. If you don’t “justify” its not an issue.
